If you are using Microsoft Security Essentials, Microsoft's free anti-virus solution, it may come a time that after several changes in your configuration the tool may present itself with some issues, and would be desirable to have a "fresh" copy installed in your computer. In addition, Microsoft's anti-virus uses it's own agenda to update the virus list and although you can do it manually, it is always time consuming to do so.
That said, here are two free portable apps that will allow you to maintain your security essentials working properly and up to date:
Repair Microsoft Security Essentials with Fix MSE Utility.
If you find that you are facing any issues in running Microsoft Security Essentials due to any reasons, use this utility. This utility will restore all its registry values & service settings to known good defaults, without the need to re-install MSE. It will re-register the concerned .dll and .exe files, required to run MSE properly. The utility may take only a moment to run, but rest assured, it does the job! It works on both 32bit and 64bit of Windows Operating Systems.
MSE Update Utility
MSE Update Utility is a simple application that updates Microsoft Security Essentials when Windows Update is disabled. Windows uses the update service to update its virus definitions and once it is disabled via Group Policy Editor, MSE won’t update anymore.Microsoft’s idea for merging the MSE update with Windows Update is perhaps the only downside of MSE and the only workaround to this was to manually update the definitions. Considering that MSE virus definitions are updated almost daily, the manual route was quite time consuming and in some cases, we simply forget to do it. To avoid this, here is where MSE Update Utility comes in.

From the main window you can select the update intervals, there are four options given – Daily, Weekly, Monthly, or Startup. I would recommend going for either Daily or on Startup. Let it run and your good to go.
That's it. I hope you found these MSE utilities useful and worth the try.
